HOME LEARNING

Home learning is emailed home to parents each week, as well as a hard copy in the children’s homework books. If you do not receive any of these, please check with the teacher in case they do not have your correct email address.

The main focus of home learning is to build on the week’s learning, especially in developing literacy, numeracy and research skills. All children are expected to read every night at an age appropriate level and length of time. Children will also have individual spelling programmes which are relevant to, and in the context of their learning. This will range from basic sight words through to crosswords to increase vocabulary. Basic spelling word lists are on the school website for those children who ‘forget’ their spelling note books. Spelling and math basic facts are the foundation of children’s learning – if they are not known, the child’s progress is hampered.

Each child has a Mathletics password (except for the first six months of Year 1) which allows them to access mathematics at home through the internet. The class teachers will be able to give guidance with this. We encourage parents to help their children with basic facts including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Some teachers may also assign home activities that link closely to the classroom Integrated Learning programme.

Supporting your child’s learning of basic facts, reading and spelling should not be for an excessive amount of time and it is beneficial to work alongside them. Some classes have Blogs and Google docs that will allow a continuation of the days programme. If you think your child should have more home learning activities, there are many cheap Literacy and Numeracy practice books that you can buy. A weekly visit to the local Library can also be worthwhile.

If you are unsure of any aspect of your child’s home learning, please email or talk to the teacher before or after school.
